The guide
Yes, particularly local search, because care searches are overwhelmingly local and made on a phone. The honest caveat is speed. Search work compounds over months rather than producing enquiries within days, which makes it the wrong first move for a home with beds empty this quarter and the right long-term move for very nearly every home.
Updated August 2026
For a care home, SEO is smaller and more practical than it sounds. In brief:
The short list
Local search first, everything else second. For a care home this is not the elaborate discipline it is for a national retailer. It is a short, specific list:
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors study, based on a survey of 47 local search specialists, put Google Business Profile signals at 32 per cent of local pack ranking weight, the largest single category, and review signals at 20 per cent, up from 16 per cent in 2023. Those two together account for more than half, and neither requires an agency.
Why local
They search for one near their mother, in a named town, often with a condition attached. Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report found Google Search was used by 82 per cent of online UK adults in the month, with most online time on a smartphone.
A page that names your towns, answers a local question and loads fast is worth more than any amount of general content about ageing.
How long it takes
Google Business Profile work within weeks. Website and content work over months.
Google Business Profile work can show within weeks.
Search engines need time to find, index and trust new pages.
Expect some movement within a quarter and a fair judgement after a year.
AI answer engines need longer still to build confidence in a source. Anyone promising rankings in weeks is describing something else.
Timing
Three situations where search work should wait.
If occupancy is falling this quarter, search work will not arrive in time. Fix enquiry handling first, which is free, then use a channel that reaches families quickly. Paid social does that, and our pillar on whether Meta ads work for care homes covers it.
More visibility into a leaky process produces more waste, not more move-ins.
If recent reviews have turned, better rankings bring more people to a problem.
AI and search
Yes, and arguably more. Around half of UK users now regularly see AI-generated summaries in search results, often without looking for them, according to Ofcom's 2025 findings. That changes the shape of the work rather than removing it.
AI answer engines build answers from web content, and they lean on pages that state a question and answer it plainly. So the discipline that serves them is the same one that serves a worried family scanning on a phone: question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first sentence underneath, real detail, and an honest source. Do that and you are optimising for both at once.
The one genuine shift is that being mentioned elsewhere matters more. Trade press, directories, review platforms and social all contribute to whether an engine considers you a real, known entity, so a purely on-site effort has a lower ceiling than it used to.
When they arrive
Reassurance, not information.
Care England and Log my Care surveyed 1,000 UK families who had recently arranged care and found reputation was the most important factor in choosing a provider at 30 per cent and that 40 per cent said working out who to trust was the hardest part.
Search brings them; the page has to do the rest.
Ranking first for a term and then showing them a page with stock photographs and no fees information wastes the ranking.
What to do first
Then, and only then, consider whether you need help with anything larger. If you do, our guide on choosing a care home marketing agency covers what to ask.
Complete and update the Google Business Profile, and reply to every review.
Add or improve pages naming the towns you serve.
Write honest answers to the five questions families ask you most on the phone.
Check the site loads quickly on a phone on mobile data.

Local search, by a distance. A complete Google Business Profile, reviews, pages naming the towns you serve, and question-shaped pages answering what families actually ask. Whitespark's 2026 study put Google Business Profile signals at 32 per cent of local pack ranking weight and review signals at 20 per cent.
Google Business Profile work can show within weeks. Website and content work usually takes months, because search engines need time to find, index and trust new pages. Expect a quarter before meaningful movement and judge it over a year.
The local part is worth it for every home, because it is cheap and it compounds. Broad content-led search work makes more sense for groups with several homes and a longer horizon. A single home should do the local basics thoroughly before paying anyone for anything larger.
Yes, and arguably more. AI answer engines build their answers from web content, and the pages they cite tend to be clearly structured ones that answer a question directly. Well organised, honest, question-shaped content serves both a search engine and an AI engine at once.
